Childhood: Román V. Castillo went to school at Alameda elementary where he would have his first experiences with percussion. The music instructor would pass out instruments to all the children in his third grade class. Román V. Castillo would receive his first snow drum. It was a practice Snare drum. And would begin to play that snare drum with rhythm and accuracy that seemed to be as if Román V. Castillo was born to play. Román V. Castillo fell in love with percussion and from that point started tapping on just about anything around him including his desk books and school papers; this would lead his musical teacher into a frustrated state in which he said “ you will never become a drummer if you continue banging on everything around you“ (how ironic)
And yes the snare drum was quickly taken away from him.
Rather than this being a let down to him Román V. Castillo explain to his mother his love for rhythm; his mother had already listened to his playing and quickly realizing his talent purchased a CB 700 drum set “seven pieces of pure heaven”
Román V. Castillo was fortunate to live in Alameda which was abundant in farmland as far as the eye can see. Seemed as though time forgot this particular little town. I’m living with his mother grandfather and grandmother in the Adobe house he had the perfect practice studio in the back that was made from in 1800s trolley. This room had been used in the past by his uncle (Pax) Larry Garcia Drummer and professional professional Albuquerque New Mexico.
His uncle would lead him on the pathway of a musical journey so to speak. Enlightening him with musicians such drum wizardry from Cozy Powell, Buddy Rich, John Bonham, And Román V. Castillo took to the drums like a fish in water! Román V. Castillo would start taking lessons from Nick Luchetti one of the best drummers in the world owner of Luchetti music and teacher to Randy Castillo (no relation)
Román V. Castillo would play his first gigs at the wine cellar with his mother as his permission slip so to speak making sure that he was not partaking in any alcoholic beverages. At the age of 18 he would enter the Thunder Drums Competition ( for this competition Román V. Castillo would ask permission to trade his 1971 Pontiac Phoenix LJ for a seven piece set of pearl exports in order to practice for the competition as he guaranteed if he did so he would win the competition hands-down)
Reluctantly his mother gave him permission to do so and after the trade was done Román V. Castillo went into the practice room where he would not come out for three months of practice at least six hours a day practicing 3 1/2 minute drum solos that he would write alongside of his mother; the competition required a 3 1/2 minute drum solo. Román V. Castillo would write a drum solo that was exactly 3 1/2 minutes. His mother would time him on the microwave timer as he would play add the one minute mark to the end she would signal with her hands one minute at the halfway point close to the end she would hold her hand in a fist 15 seconds towards the end of the solo she would shake her hand signaling that there was 15 seconds to finish up. Román V. Castillo would take the competition by storm being called last at the competition Román V. Castillo remembers hoping that the crowd was not too tired and not the drum competition judges were still in a good mood. Román V. Castillo would play a flawless drum set winning the 18 and under category in which the winner took home a five piece set of pearl Esporte series drums in which he would build His first monster drum set. Which would lead him into building many others.
During this time Román V. Castillo would work as a roadie behind the scenes With many prominent companies in New Mexico such as NRG Staging, Prestige Security, and QuickBeam Lighting and sound, (“climbing amongst the steel doing lights was one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done”) says Román V. Castillo
Roman would start his first project Predes
